As a kid, I watched my dad direct and produce television commercials, particularly mesmerized by the elaborate editing suites where sound and visual magic happened. "That's what I want to do," I thought. And I did.
For me, video and film have been a doorway to learning - about people, places, experiences, and life. Whether working as a journalist, educator, or filmmaker, my path has been to capture and distill individual stories, creating vignettes that illustrate a small slice of the human experience. Through others, we see ourselves. The camera lens provides a wondrous point of view, and the person behind it offers the portal for others to be transported and share another's experience. Magic indeed.
With my newly minted Journalism degree in 1987, I started my career as a TV news video editor in Denver, Colorado. I learned from the BEST - the award winning photographers and editors at KUSA-TV.
I made my first short doc as a class assignment when I was in graduate school in 2001. I called it "Two Hands", a self portrait illustrating all the different things my own hands touched daily - filming and editing, making pottery, playing drums, being a mom...
That title became my company name, Two Hands Films. I've directed, filmed , and edited seven professional documentary films since then, each taking several years to produce.
The darkness of war, the luck of escape, and a vibrant island of acceptance - Cuba.
How far would you go for your beliefs?
An inspiring educational concept!
Honoring my friend and colleague, Katrina Miller.
